7 (PLUS 1) DEADLY ☠ SINS OF TIME MANAGEMENT 🕰
I have rarely met a lawyer who does not complain about being time poor. I would be the first to confess to at least one of the below:-
1. Taking on too much 👿 (“‘no'” is the hardest word”)
2. Allowing constant interruptions 👿 (“my door is always open”)
3. Estimating and Capturing time inaccurately 👿 (“my estimate might scare off the client” or “how long is a piece of string?”)
4. Procrastinating 👿 (“I’ll leave the strategy plan on the ‘too difficult’ pile”)
5. Doing everything yourself 👿 (“it takes longer to explain than just to get it done!”)
6. Being a perfectionist 👿 (“I got this far by always getting straight As!”)
7. Dismissing Technology 👿 (“AI can’t trump the human factor so why the fuss?”)
There is a further one I would like to add to the above list and that is:-
8. The belief that there is nothing that can be done about time poverty among law firm partners and fee earners 👿 (“it comes with the territory” or “there are only 24 hours in a day”)
In her attached article, Irene Leonard sets out some useful tips for avoiding these deadly sins. My view is that a personalised plan of action to improve your efficiency in a practical way, as well as the mental tools to deal with overwhelm, is essential. I benefited greatly from one to one coaching in my time as a law firm leader.
